Analysts have more AI tools and data sources than ever, but their work is still isolated and tool-dependent, split across systems that don’t talk to each other.
Quantly and OpenBB share the belief that analysts should be able to access all available data and AI capabilities anywhere and bring them together in one place. That’s why Quantly can be delivered via MCP into OpenBB Workspace, so analysts can leverage Quantly’s multi-step workflow (playbooks) capabilities directly inside OpenBB.
How OpenBB and Quantly fit together
OpenBB Workspace provides the terminal-like UI layer and enterprise work environment: dashboards, artifacts/widgets, and a copilot interface where teams can centralize work and bring in specialized agents and data sources as needed.
Quantly provides a sophisticated workflow layer through playbooks - multi-step, editable workflows that analysts can design and refine. Playbooks make it possible to run end-to-end, repeatable processes (not just one-off queries) and produce structured outputs that can be reused and shared across a team, or feed a database to uncover insights.
MCP is the portability layer.
Quantly’s MCP interface ensures Quantly's capabilities can be consumed from any UI. OpenBB is one such UI, acting as the unifying workspace where analysts can pull together tools, data, and AI capabilities that would otherwise remain isolated.
This connects to a broader theme: one of the biggest problems in the space is that data and AI tooling are siloed across different products, forcing analysts to stitch together workflows manually. OpenBB becomes the unifying layer for accessing capabilities, and Quantly brings multi-step workflow power into that layer without requiring analysts to change where they work.
OpenBB users expand their stack with Quantly playbooks
With Quantly connected via MCP, OpenBB users can:
- Discover and run Quantly playbooks directly inside OpenBB chat
- Create new playbooks and edit existing playbooks directly where they work
- Generate insights and accelerate multi-step workflows such as earnings previews, company coverage initiation reports, management Q&A prep and any other internal research process.
- Turn outputs into tables/text artifacts that can be pinned to dashboards for persistent monitoring and sharing
Quantly users get a native “terminal” surface inside OpenBB
Quantly playbooks are most valuable when they’re:
- easy to run from the analyst’s day-to-day environment,
- easy to persist (dashboards, widgets, reusable artifacts),
- and easy to govern (permissions, safe tool exposure).
OpenBB Workspace provides that “home base” UI. With MCP, Quantly workflows show up as first-class capabilities inside the analyst workspace, rather than requiring a separate destination or duplicated UI.
How it works
In the demo below, the user simply asked in OpenBB which Quantly playbooks were available.
OpenBB surfaced the list, and from there, the user chose to get the weekly news update, a summary that aggregates news on the building materials sector and specified companies, presenting findings in a table with implications for the stocks.
The user was then able to compare those results against their own portfolio to assess impact and second order effects, and finally check the exposure by sector.
All without leaving the same Workspace.
Tool selection: expose everything or keep the agent focused
In OpenBB, users can choose which MCP tools to expose:
- expose all Quantly tools, or
- expose a subset (important as the tool surface grows)
Why openness matters: connect capabilities once, consume everywhere
This case study reflects a bigger shift: research workflows shouldn’t be trapped inside one UI.
Quantly exposes workflow capabilities through MCP so they can be consumed wherever analysts operate. OpenBB provides the unifying workspace where data sources and agent capabilities can be brought together.
The combination reduces tool fragmentation, supports repeatable multi-step processes, and helps institutions move from “AI experiments” to operational workflows.
